Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, has strongly criticised pro-Khalistan elements and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada, calling it a “gesture of magnanimity” that reinforces India’s openness and confidence on the global stage.

Rubin said PM Modi’s acceptance of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to the June 15–17 summit demonstrates India has “nothing to hide” and is ready for a constructive international dialogue.

Contrasting Carney with former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Rubin said, “Carney understands the importance of India. Trudeau, on the other hand, focused on image and political posturing. Carney wants to restore maturity to the relationship.”

He emphasized that Modi’s participation sends a clear message: “The problem was not Canada, but the immaturity and unprofessionalism of Justin Trudeau.”

Rubin further stressed India’s willingness to engage in serious conversations, much like its partnership with the United States. He criticised Trudeau for making unsubstantiated accusations against India to appease radical domestic groups.

“What PM Modi is demonstrating is that India has nothing to hide. For genuine law enforcement cooperation, the dialogue must be two-way. That includes tackling illegal immigration, terror financing, and the role of radical Sikh mafias in Canada,” Rubin said.

He also warned about the consequences of providing safe havens to extremist elements. “Supporting or tolerating the Khalistan movement—which has historical links to terrorism and organised crime—ultimately erodes Canada’s moral and strategic standing,” he noted.

Rubin concluded by stating that both Justin Trudeau and his father, Pierre Trudeau, undermined Canada’s global credibility by enabling extremist factions like the Khalistanis.

The remarks come ahead of the G7 Summit, where India is expected to play a key role in discussions on global security, economic stability, and counterterrorism.
